SESSION 5
AUDIENCES FROM LOWER ECONOMIC BACKGROUNDS
Friday 30 July, 11.30am - 1.30pm - Online
Access Coventry is a series of online training sessions targeted at professional artists and the small-scale independent arts sector based in Coventry and Warwickshire.
These training sessions are aimed at equipping artists with knowledge and practical strategies to provide for different audiences with different access needs.
This fifth session in our series focuses on audiences from lower economic backgrounds.
Keynote speakers include:
Liza Vallance - Studio 3 Arts
Liza Vallance is Artistic Director of Studio 3 Arts.
Her work is driven by the idea of democratising art; of challenging the cultural and social hierarchies that exist in the creative industries. Liza is an instigator, a storyteller and an activist; co-creating work with communities that helps us make sense of the world.
She is a creative who loudly and proudly identifies as ‘working class’.

Kathi Leahy - Imagineer Productions
Imagineer is a creative company specialising in cultural events and celebrations whose ambitious work combines imagination, creativity, engineering and spectacle. The Imagineer team has a long track record in outdoor performance work and celebratory arts with a strong international focus. Its mission is to produce new and extraordinary outdoor work; creating beauty and human connections where you least expect them.
Kathi is an Associate Director at Imagineer and passionately believes in increasing access as widely as possible through Imagineers’ work. Through their Carnival and Transformations programmes Kathi has worked to break down the financial barriers to accessing culture.
Our speakers will be sharing their knowledge and experiences of common barriers audiences from lower economic backgrounds may encounter and how they are working towards overcoming these. At the end of the session, you will gain an understanding of good practice and identify some simple steps to take to make your events more accessible.
Each training session is designed to help you up-skill and increase your understanding of the experiences or access needs of audiences. To get the most out of this course we encourage you to attend as many of the events as you can.
Access Coventry is the first step of many on our citywide journey of creating a manifesto aimed at making Coventry a more accessible place to experience culture.
