Rachel is a mixed media artist mostly working in textiles and the found object.

Rachel is a mixed media artist mostly working in textiles and the found object. She creates pieces by repurposing materials that have a history and a story so that new tales can be told. Her work evokes memories and emotions of time, place and identity and is very much focussed on making and process.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Rachel Doughty has a BA in Fine Art and an MA in Contemporary Arts Practice, both from Coventry University. She is a qualified teacher, teaching adults which she does through regular classes and workshops.

She has worked in many different media but is now focusing on working predominantly in recycled textiles, which she paints and incorporates with found objects.

By using textiles that have a history and found objects that share that history, she evokes memories and emotions of time and place. Her work is also about renewal and repair, not just of the materials but also of herself.

Doughty’s current work concerns the processing of emotions, one’s experiences of loss and grief: something I experienced recently when I lost both my parents in 2021. She also practices gifting in her work and makes small talismans, currently pebbles wrapped in fabric and stitched, that she gives away as she has always been interested in the placebo effect, so whatever people’s beliefs, her talismans are designed to give comfort where it is needed.
